Moscow Subway System

When I did research for my trip, I found out one of the major tourist attractions of Moscow is the subway system.  When it was first built in the mid 1930s, Stalin decided to make the stations very stylish with paintings & chandeliers inside many of them.  Later stations were more utilitarian in design, but some of the newer stations are more lavish.  One thing you notice is how clean they are and how safe they seem since police are everywhere in the stations.

The Moscow subway system has 200 stations, 10 lines, & carries about 7 million people per day.  The cost per ticket is 50 rubles ($.85) and you can change trains as many times as want to for the same fare.  Tickets are easy to buy through the machine with an English menu option.  All the signs inside are in Russian, but many have an English translation.

I decided to do my own subway station tour of the more interesting stations.  Luckily since it was a long holiday week, the stations were less busy compared to a normal workday.  Listed below are some photos from my tour.
